The Hunting Public Trapper Hat Review

The Hunting Public trapper hat has become somewhat internet famous among the hunting crowd. One of the guys on The Hunting Public videos always wears a trapper hat. Since they hunt in some extreme environments, I thought I’d give one a try this past hunting season.

However, I didn’t really want to pay $40 for one from Cabela’s, so I went back to one of my favorite companies, Salt Armor. They had a deal (like they always do) where I got the trapper hat and a bunch of other stuff (like faceshields) for $20. I’ll absolutely give it a try for $20!

The Hunting Public Trapper Hat Review

When I got the hat from Salt Armor, I was really impressed with the faux fur parts of the hat and the clip that secures it under your chin. I hate hats that I have to constantly pull down to cover my ears and that’s part of what drew me to the trapper hat style. They may not be the most stylish thing in the woods, but I’m going for utility, not style.

The top of the hat did not impress me too much. I could see through it when I held it up to the sun, so not a lot of insulation on top. This had me a little concerned, but not too much. It was big enough that I could wear a thin Merino wool beanie underneath it to keep the top of my head warm.

Again, it was a $20 hat (really, less, because I got a couple faceshields with it, too). I did not have high expectations and if it worked out, I might be tempted to spend the extra money on a good one from Cabela’s.

Trapper Hat Results

I finally got the chance to try the hat out on my annual West Virginia hunting trip. Opening day had the temps down in the teens and lower.

I could not believe how warm the hunting public trapper hat kept me! I even had to take it off a few times, because it was just too hot. The lack of insulation in the top of the hat was never an issue.
